Order Up: March Madness

12 Mar

Oh Austin, March is the month that we love to hate you.  This month, out-of-towners make up most of the population of Austin due to South by Southwest – the digital portion and the music portion have both become equally hot tickets.  We realize Sx is one of those uniquely awesome Austin events and it pumps a ton of cash into our local economy… but (and you knew there would be a but), it’s hard to get excited when you don’t have a badge. When SXSW descends, traffic sucks, working downtown sucks, and inevitably, in its wake, tons of people decide Austin is THE place to be, which ultimately crowds the rest of us out of our beloved city.

But we just can’t quit you, SXSW. Despite the annoyances, we’ve got nothing but love for the tons of cool shiz that happens around town each March.

First and foremost, the local food trucks are out in full force, wheels blazing, in order to service the hungry hoards clogging the streets. If you’re on the hunt for something new, you have to keep your head on a swivel and your Twitter feed streaming; be sure to follow faves like @austinfoodcarts and hashtag #sxswtrailer to stay in the food loop.

We also love SXSW for bringing an Anthony Bourdain panel — Tony Bourdain is beyond awesome and if you have the opportunity to attend his panel on March 13th, go or we will shun you (shun you hard).  He and his crew will also be hanging around the city to film an episode for the upcoming 8th season of No Reservations.  Two Chicks gives you permission to stalk him because we’re planning to as well (but we better not see you in our spot).

But Bourdain isn’t the only famous food celeb who will be in town.  On the 17th, Rachael Ray will be back for her annual SXSW party at Stubb’s, which marries awesome food with equally awesome music. Now,  we understand Ray can be, shall we say, controversial — some people find her as pleasant as nails on a chalkboard. But wherever food is involved, Two Chicks humbly suggests you dial your judgment down a notch, especially when it comes to this free event. If you’ve learned nothing else from us, you’ve learned that free is always a good thing. Say what you will about her skills, but it is hard to hate on a woman who managed to make it rain thanks to a modest retail gig and her singular love of food.

As soon as you recover from all your SXSW shenanigans, the end of March will bring another Austin Restaurant Week – our most favorite event ever!  For those of you who would like to check out Uchi and Uchiko, we would suggest booking your reservation now.  Their ARW menu isn’t up yet, but no doubt they will be a popular choice for diners who want to check out Paul Qui’s work.

We wish you luck — and are hoping for a little luck, too! — as you drive through downtown and play Frogger with all the out-of-towners!
